Synopsis (via Netflix)

To escape a scandal, a bestselling author journeys to Scotland, where she falls in love with a castle – and faces off with the grumpy duke who owns it.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

Sophie Brown is a successful author who is in the middle of a PR nightmare for killing off one of the main characters. To course correct, she is put on the Drew Barrymore show by her agent/friend, Claire. Drew sides with the angry fans and goes HARD on Sophie, saying that killing off the character was a metaphor for her husband. That pushes Sophie to a public meltdown.

Sophie decides to go to Scotland until the bad press dies down. She plans to get away and write.

In Dunbar’s small but beautiful town, Sophie stays at an Air bed and breakfast called The Castle, run by a woman named Maisie, who is happy she killed off the character. Sophie runs into the groundskeeper, literally, and they have a moment.

Sophie rides her bike to Dun Dunbar Castle, and the groundskeeper is there as well, working on the grounds. He offers to give Sophie a tour, and it is pretty extensive. When Sophie is left alone for a moment, she sneaks into a closed part of the castle. She finds a carving on a door hinge and takes a photo. The groundskeeper catches her and gets VERY pissed off. He charges her double for the tour.

The choosing of Scotland wasn’t so random; it turns out Sophie’s father spent time in the town as a child, and his father worked at the castle.

Sophie is having an “Eat, Pray, Love” moment and decides to buy the castle and is surprised to learn that the groundskeeper is the owner, Myles. He agrees to sell if she moves in while he still lives there till Christmas. (90-day escrow or something.) Myles plans to make her stay so unbearable that she gives Dun Dunbar back to him.

Myles gives Sophie the upstairs tour and gives her the most dilapidated room. No heat, leaking ceilings, and it is probably haunted.

It takes her no time to walk in on Myles taking a bath.

Sophie asks some of the women in town to help her decorate her room. They share that Myles is selling the castle so the town can keep their land, as it belongs to the Duke.

Then she spends the day with Myles touring Scotland and later singing and dancing at a bar. They almost kiss goodnight but hug instead. The Duke is sure to tell her that it wasn’t a date, but it totally was a date.

Sophie decides to reinstate a tradition of inviting the town to the castle for a Christmas party. They hook up shortly after and fall in love immediately. Cue a love montage of them decorating, practicing dancing, and eating snowflakes.

Myles gets upset when Sophie asks him to stay in the castle, and she calls off the sale. No one will take her to the airport because they want her to stay. Sophie spends Christmas even alone and crying.

A “we used to be in love montage” happens

The Christmas at the castle party is still on, and Myles makes a grand gesture on a horse to try and apologize. I’m not sure WHY she takes him back, but she does.

The Christmas party happens, and it is pretty fun. Including some jigs and Scottish music.

Myles gives Sophie a locket, and then we get bloopers or something with Drew Barrymore? This movie really lost steam at the end. Wow!
