Synopsis (via Hallmark)
Four days before Christmas, Elizabeth Athens receives a voicemail from a number she doesn’t recognize. On the message, a man she doesn’t know makes one final plea to the love of his life for a second chance. The fifth installment of the popular movie franchise, based on Blake Shelton’s song ‘Time for Me to Come Home.’
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Elizabeth is a grad student focusing on journalism and loves cupcakes! Her mother introduces her to a COO at a holiday party. She is “rescued” from the party by a handsome man named Josh; he takes her to his family party, where Elizabeth runs into Andrew…!!!! Who is Andrew? I guess her best friend? They talk about working for the New York Times and make a wish for a shooting star.
Flash to three years later. Elizabeth works for her mother’s company as an executive assistant. She gets a call from an unknown number and lets it go to voicemail. The caller leaves a message, and it is a man calling for someone named Maddy. He wants to meet on Christmas eve at 9pm. Elizabeth tries to call back, but the number is to a hotel.
Elizabeth visits the hotel and begs them to try and find the caller. When they turn her away, she leaves and bumps into Josh, who is back in town. He sees the message and chases after Elizabeth. She doesn’t want to talk to him.
Elizabeth remembers her friend at a memorial for Andrew as she lights a candle. He died in a car accident, and Elizabeth was in the car.
She listens to the voicemail repeatedly and hears him talk about a candy store. She tracks down the store and takes a picture of a raffle sign-up sheet. It isn’t much, but it is enough to get started. Josh helps her do some research and hears faint music in the background.
We learn through a flashback that Josh liked Elizabeth but overheard a conversation she was having with Andrew about being more than friends. The only thing is she was talking to Andrew about Josh. Obviously.
Josh and Lizzie decorate gingerbread cookies are wonder about the mystery man. They hope they get a second chance even if he doesn’t find who he is looking for.
We see Madelyn with her new boyfriend, they have a perfect day that includes a tea party, and he asks her to meet his family. It is the next step. The guy isn’t the right one for her because she is meant to be with Carter! (The voicemail guy!)
Lizzie looks for a Christmas song playing in the background via a snow globe. The song is, of course, “It’s Time for Me to Come Home.” Lizzie and Josh rush to the store that is selling the snow globe. The sales clerk remembers the man and promises to let them know if he comes back in.
They realize that they misheard something in the voicemail, and instead of Holidays, the caller references Hallidaze, a local Christmas market where Maddie might work. They play a Christmas Wreath right toss. Josh wins; his prize is Lizzie coming to his family’s Christmas dinner.
The man is upset that Madeline hasn’t reached out. He has coffee with his friend Pete, and he tells him that he is in a better place. Pete tells his friend not to stick around to get his heart broken.
Josh finally confronts Lizzie about her conversation with Andrew and tells her that he has heard everything. She tells him she still feels the same, but they are talking about different things! (Argh! So frustrating) He tells her that he is moving to a cabin in the woods and share that he has loved spending time together as friends. Elizabeth is confused and heartbroken.
Carter sees Madelyn with her new boyfriend, and they look like they are in love, but really they are breaking up.
Josh finds Madelyn and rushes to tell Elizabeth. Maddy is playing the town Christmas concert, and they sneak into the venue and backstage to play her the voicemail. She is overwhelmed because it is the message she has been waiting to hear.
Maddy has a voicemail, too; it is from Carter to Elizabeth. He was the driver of the car that ran into Elizabeth and Andrew. He was looking for Elizabeth to apologize. The guilt was too much for Carter and sent him into a spiral.
Josh and Elizabeth meet Carter at the diner. She tells him that he got the numbers wrong and the voicemails were mixed up. Elizabeth and Carter sit down to talk. He asks for her apology, and she says she never blamed him.
Elizabeth and Josh realize they were mixed up too; she wasn’t telling Andy that she loved him, she was telling him she loved Josh. They make out and are finally able to love one another.
At the Christmas concert, we hear “Time to Come Home for Christmas.” Josh and Elizabeth enjoy the concert, and so does carter from the stage wings. Maddy sees him and smiles.
