Synopsis (via Hulu)
A newly separated mom, Mariah, gets into numerous wars of words with her ex-husband, David. Their daughter, Ivy, wanting to re-unite the family, makes a Christmas wish with Santa leading to many hilarious mishaps. Mariah can’t say ‘no’, and David can’t tell a ‘lie.’ Will this be the holiday miracle that this family needs to bring them together?
Recap/Wine Thoughts
David is a hot-shot real estate agent who lies to clients to make the sale. For example, a Christmas tree catches on fire during a showing, and he moves the client right on by! His assistant helps him cover up his lies; they are also sleeping together.
Mariah is work-obsessed and doesn’t have time for dating, even though her sassy/boozy lesbian friend (This is new and fun! Julie tries to set up Mariah. She doesn’t have time for that because David, who Mariah co-parents with, forgot to pick up their daughter Ivy from school. David and Mariah argue in the yard. She thinks David is a deadbeat, and he thinks Mariah is a helicopter mother. He even says she “let herself go.” (Which is messed up.)
Ivy is headstrong and smart. She knows her parents don’t get along because this fight lasts too long; we get the point. Ivy screams at her parents to stop fighting. Then she tells them she is too old to go see Santa and tells them to enjoy the last trip to the mall.
Santa is one of those saints who really make wishes come true. He asks Ivy what she wants, and she wants her parents to stop fighting and get back together. Santa says that he can’t make that in his toy shop. Santa promises to help Ivy wish for what she really wants. The wishing is interrupted by Mariah and David fighting. Ivy doubles down on her wishing and causes things lights to flicker. (Oh wait, a security guard is responsible and delivers the “My Bad!” line iconically here.)
The following day David wakes up and cannot lie. He ruins his relationship with his assistant and is rude to people.
On the flip side, Mariah cannot say no. Ivy is thrilled because she asks her mother to skip school and do holiday activities all day. (She also donated to Sarah McGlauclin on the TV and told her mom to move across the street) David goes to the bar to drown his sorrows. He tells off a wanna-be influencer.
Mariah freaks out and calls Julie, but Julie is already drinking wine out of the bottle with a straw and is ready to party, which they do with a shopping montage! Ivy gets her ears pierced. Then they get tattoos.
Julie and Mariah head to the club, and they see David. David tells them about the breakup. Julie realizes that David can’t lie and Mariah can’t say no. I think this is a high school reunion or something.
There is an extended pool-playing scene followed by a karaoke scene where David introduces his song, “Sometimes you have to don’t stop believing,” and then DOESN’T SING BON JOVI??!?!
David and Mariah have a heart-to-heart and put the past in the past. Since David can’t lie, Mariah gets the honest answers she has been looking for from him. They kiss and go home together. They enjoy their time together and plan on getting back together.
Those plans are thrown off when Mariah waits for David at his place, and Chantelle (the assistant.) shows up and tells her off. Mariah leaves angrily, thinking that SHE is the other woman.
Mariah cries to Julie and feels foolish. David shows up, and Julie defends her friend; David says it is a misunderstanding and just wants a chance to explain.
David talks to Mariah. he promises that he has ended things with Chante. Mariah forgives him. They are happy! The end!
Side Note
The movie’s pacing was a little slow; we get where it is going; let’s pick it up or at least make exciting choices.
The supporting roles in this one are WAY over the top. (See crossing guard and Julie)
Minority Report: The cast features almost all Black or POC actors and queer characters. Nailed it on diversity.
