Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Danielle travels to New Orleans to meet her grandmother and uncover the truth about her mother’s death. Drawn into a dangerous feud with the rival Benoit family, Danielle learns her mother’s death was no accident and must navigate treachery, uncover secrets, and decide whether to destroy both families’ legacies to find justice.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie begins with a mother putting her baby to for bedtime. Looks like it could be in the 70s? The mother is attacked by someone in a Mardi Gras mask and thrown down the stairs.
Danielle comes down to the Big Easy to get background on her birth family. Danielle was adopted and, unfortunately, didn’t inherit any rhythm, as she claps along with street busers.
Claire is a wealthy but sick congresswoman in the city. Her niece, Louise, wants to take over and is waiting for Claire to kick the bucket, which wouldn’t be good for Danielle, who shows up on the doorstep and tells Claire she is her long-lost granddaughter. Claire doesn’t seem the least bit surprised and offers her granddaughter a room in her mansion. Everyone else in town is SHOCKED. (Especially Louise, who seems threatened.)
Danielle doesn’t want to step on anyone’s toes. Still, she wants to learn about her family’s legacy and their exclusive Mardi Gras celebrations. They pick out an outfit for Danielle’s big debut, which is sure to make Louise even more upset. The dress was her mother Charlotte’s. Claire makes the rounds at the party, introducing the high-powered city officials to Danielle.
Louise decides she can’t wait for Claire to pass away naturally and risk her possibly changing the will, so she swaps out some meds in hopes of speeding things along. (Lord knows the movie needs to pick up the pace!) It doesn’t work out, Claire survives, so Louise has to go with plan A. Messing with the meds again!!!!
Danielle feels like something is up and looks into Clair’s medication. The pills don’t match the ones in the bottles, and she calls the police, who are not helpful and tell her she is overreacting and making things out of nothing.
It’s obvious that Louise killed Danielle’s mother, Charlotte. Louise even has the mask hidden in a drawer. Louise nominates herself to manage the estate while Claire recovers. Meanwhile, Danielle is out there showing her tits for beads. (Not really, but there is a parade montage set to a Muzak version of “House of the Rising Sun” that I think I had on my Yamaha Keyboard in middle school.)
While out partying, Danielle gets drugged. Then, she is followed by a creepy masked figure while she is lost in the crowd. The masked figure is all sparkly and kind of killing the lewk. Danielle is almost stabbed to death, but is saved by Louise’s husband. (Who was Charlotte’s boyfriend and Danielle’s daddy?)
Danielle finds love letters and brings them to Alex. He tells her that he was in an arranged marriage with Louise as a power play. Charlotte and Alex were going to run away with the baby until the murder. Alex is the next to be drugged.
Louise and Danielle have their final confrontation, and as they fight it out. Danielle arranges for the story to leak to the party guests downstairs. Danielle makes a run for it, and Louise chases after her into the party. No one sides with Louise, and the police arrest Louise and drag her away.
STRAY Thought
The very dramatic music didn’t make up for the very boring plot.
