Synopsis (via Lifetime)
In the wake of her estranged sister’s death, Ashley finds herself caring for her niece, who she’s never met before. As they grapple with their shared loss, Ashley must uncover the truth that lurks beneath her own roof, before it’s too late
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie begins with Ashley’s sister falling into a pool and drowning. Where was the lifeguard?!!? Her daughter Serena finds the body and calls her auntie Ashley for help.
Ashley gets the call about Courtney and learns her sister died. Ashley is understandably upset and cries in her husband Elliot’s arms. (He is allergic to peanuts! Yes, it comes up that randomly!) Ashley takes in Serena even though she has been estranged from her sister for 16 years. Courtney had anger issues and cut Ashley off after their parents died and left everything to Ashley.
Ashley talks to the detectives, and they rule the death accidental. The social worker, Rebecca, tells Ashley that it isn’t going to be easy and Serena is troubled, just like her runaway mother. I mean, Serena is wearing a choker and talking to a doll, so I don’t know what to think about her.
Serena has nightmares about discovering her mother in the pool. Ashley Luns, Ashley’s daughter, wastes no time being jealous of the attention NOT being on her. Luna is on the soccer team, and Serena wants to join the team at her new school. (OMG, I can’t get away from soccer with this and the World Cup. Haha!)
Luna and Serena do not get along, and things even get physical. Serena has doubts about living with Aunt Ashley, especially because Luna is being THE WORST!
Then Elliott’s peanut allergy comes back to haunt him. He has a severe reaction after eating breakfast that Serena made. Ashley saves her husband, but he is creeped out and tells the family therapist that he doesn’t trust her. The therapist wants to talk to both girls; a teen therapist is truly doing the Lord’s work. These girls are popping off.
The therapist thinks Serena being attached to the doll is creepy AF, but also might be a substitute for her dead parents. Ashley tries to reason with the girls, and it shockingly seems to work until Courtney’s ashes arrive from the funeral director.
Maddox, Ashley’s son, falls through a trampoline safety net, and Elliot blames Serena. Ashley tells her husband that things have just turned around. Even still, they ship the teens off to camp, and Ashley snoops through Serena’s room. She takes pictures of Serena’s diary and sends them to the school guidance counselor. Ashley starts to think Ashley might have killed her parents because they were abusive alcoholics.
Ashley drives up to camp, and Serena comes clean about Courtney’s abusive ways. Ashley knows her sister’s temper well. It seems that Serena has a short fuse too, after a bully named Molly ends up in the river. Karma can be a bitch. Ashley puts baby monitors under the teens’ beds to get more information. Ashley hears the teens talking, and they are covering something up.
The autopsy results come back, and it looks like someone drugged Courtney. There is also a paternity test; Elliott is Serena’s biological father. Elliott was having an affair with Courtney, and honestly, it is genius because those sisters were estranged and weren’t talking to one another.
Ashley calls detectives, but Elliott comes home early. She puts the phone in her back pocket so they can hear the conversation. Ashley accuses Elliott of sleeping with her sister, and he says, “It just happened.” He says Courtney was blackmailing him for money, so he had to put a stop to it. He drugged Courtney and drowned her in the pool, and he is about to do the same to Ashley when the police pull up and stop him.
Ashley takes her family on a fresh start, to a house without a pool.
STRAY Thought
This was sooooooo weird. Like I can’t rationalize anything that happened in this movie.
