Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Laura Paddington is overcome with joy when her daughter, Zoe, returns to her after being abducted 17 years before–but is Zoe really her long lost child?
Thoughts
Laura is a busy lawyer who is also raising her daughter with a birthmark on her neck. While at a hot dog stand, Laura is on the phone, distracted Zoe goes missing. (This actor child is adorable.) Laura frantically calls the police and screams for her daughter.
Flash to seventeen years later, Laura is in a support group and dating one of the members named Jacob. He makes her a fancy dinner and tells her that he loves her. Jacob proposes after five months of dating, and Laura storms off. At first, I thought she was joking, but no. Laura is very much still grieving over her daughter and has even kept her daughters room the same. She still blames herself. Jacob is exceptionally supportive and continues to stand by her side. They go up to a cabin for a getaway. Then he helps her pack up Zoe’s room because Laura is ready to move on.
Laura drops off Zoe’s things at a donation center and sees a girl who reminds her of her daughter. The woman’s name is Rebecca, and doesn’t seem to appreciate Laura obsessing over her. Laura video chats with her ex-husband Richard who seems concerned for Laura’s well being. Jacob is also worried about his girlfriend. The birthmark proves Laura’s hunch is correct.
Detectives question Rebecca and she shares that she came from an abusive household. Her aunt would move from state to state and changed her name. The woman who raised her was named Anita White. Rebecca claims she was a runaway. Detectives have questions and tell Laura that it is inconclusive. Jacob convinces Laura to submit a DNA test with Rebecca and recommends an independent service. The DNA results come back as a match, and detectives stop their investigation.
Rebecca moves in with Laura and looks through old photos. They talk about her hopes and dreams. Laura even suggests Rebecca get her high school diploma. Richard returns from a business trip and meets his daughter. He gifts her a bracelet from Bangladesh but is surprised to learn Rebecca remembers very little. Richard wants a second test because he feels something is off. He thinks Rebecca and Jacob might be having an affair.
A stranger attacks Laura outside of her work. Jacob places doubts in her mind about Richard’s intentions. This causes Laura to make an update to her will to include Zoe. She shares the information with Zoe, who seems to be spending more time alone with Jacob.
The FBI agent who was working on the case trails Zoe and sees Zoe and Jacob meeting. He calls Richard to warn him about what he saw, but Jacob murders him before talking. Richard is sure that Zoe is lying to Laura.
Jacob re-proposes to Laura, and she accepts. Then she is horrified to see Jacob and Zoe in an installment embrace. She accuses him of acting inappropriately and then meets with Richard. Richard tells her that he is a suspect in the murder investigation of the FBI agent. He accuses Jacob of being behind everything.
Laura steals some hair from “Zoe’s” hairbrush to resubmit a DNA test without Jacob’s knowledge. Then she suggests that Zoe stay with Richard so they can get better acquainted. Jacob isn’t into the idea.
The DNA test results come back, and Zoe finds them first. She admits to impersonating Laura’s daughter and pulls a gun on her. She forces Laura into a car, and they meet with Jacob at his cabin. On her way to the cabin, Laura calls Richard with her cellphone so that he can track her down.
Jacob ties Laura up and plans to kill her after stealing all her money. Rebecca/Zoe turns on Jacob and helps Laura escape. They run into a barn or something and fight Jacob together. Laura shoots Jacob and holds him down until the police arrive.
Six months later, Laura works at the woman’s shelter and is back with Richard. They are cool with Rebecca, even if she isn’t their daughter. The real Zoe is NEVER FOUND?!?!
