Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Scarlett (Irvin) is an incredible chef and co-owner of an upscale restaurant. But every year, her too-sophisticated and unique holiday dishes never sell because they are not considered festive enough. To shake things up this year, her best friend and co-owner buys her a ticket to a holiday cooking getaway in a beautiful villa where Scarlett will re-learn festive cooking from the bottom up, maybe find love with a handsome rival chef from her past (Roerig), and regain the Christmas spirit her food—and her life—truly needs.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Scarlett works in a restaurant as head chef. Her friend Claire is a co-owner and is worried that the buzz for the new restaurant is down. She suggests to Scarlett that they do a comfort food holiday menu, and Scarlett is dead set against it. (they really are best friends because they text in emojis.)
While shopping for the restaurant, she runs into an old culinary school classmate named James. He buys all the potatoes in the store and forces her to sing a spice song to get the potatoes. She reluctantly and awkwardly sings, but then he says he is just kidding and gives her the potatoes.
When a big investor named Stetson wants to pull out his funding due to low sales numbers, Claire panics and tells him about the holiday menu idea. To inspire Scarlett, Claire signs up her friend for a holiday cooking class… taught by JAMES!
Scarlett is the most experienced in the class. Others in the class are an old married couple, newlyweds, and a motherly figure. Scarlett and James banter during the class, and she doesn’t really pay attention to his lessons. Then Scarlett underminds James and teaches her classmates some “advanced” tricks. (Like how to use a knife to chop a sweet potato.)
Cooking tutorials and montages happen. James has aspirations of starting his own restaurant after failing to open one before. Scarlett tells him that he is a great teacher.
James and Scarlett spend time outdoors to try and find inspiration. Scarlett comes up with sweet potatoes and vanilla beans as a recipe.
The class is complete, and all the students get something special from the experience. Scarlett invites a high-profile reviewer (Played by the guy who plays the Mayor in every Christmas movie) to the class’s final presentation to raise exposure for the course. All the relationships fall apart from the pressure.
The restaurant tasting is finally happening, and Scarlett uses her mother’s gingerbread recipe and asks her mother to cook in the kitchen with her. The reviewer and investor, of course, love the meal since it was cooked from the heart and with family.
James shows up at the restaurant and tells Scarlett that it is the best holiday he has ever had and he wants to spend every Christmas with her. They kiss.
One year later, James’s classes are sold out for years, and the restaurant is thriving. James even releases a cookbook!
Side Note
This movie was a Canadian released in 2021 and should have stayed that way. So Boring!
