Synopsis (via Hallmark)
Liv is a photojournalist eager to make it on her own. To get a dream assignment — shooting the Chang family’s annual holiday party for a cover story — she doesn’t reveal that they are, in fact, her family. When she finds herself growing close to Henry, the co-worker covering the story with her, she wants to confide in him but doesn’t want to jeopardize her big break.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
Liv is an Instagram photographer rining a social media account all about her favorite town San Fransico. Her parents go all out for Christmas and throw an extravagant party. Her mother wants Live to bring a date, and Live might have someone to bring this year.
A new writer named Henry arrives from the Bangkok post. He writes a story for the paper about his first American Christmas. He bonds with Liv and her brother, Andrew. Andrew and Henry even go to dinner to help him get adjusted to the country.
Henry pitches Chang’s Christmas party to the newspaper boss, Charles. He goes for it and says it will be a “Changtastic Christmas.” Liv is upset with her brother for even telling henry about the family party. She is embarrassed about how hard her parents go for Christmas.
Liv shows Henry around town, and they get bubble tea together. He wants to visit the Chang family. Liv doesn’t want her parents to meet Henry because they will insist that she date him? (I guess?!) She goes to extreme lengths to pretend she is unrelated to her family. (If he is a journalist tho, wouldn’t he already know?)
Instead of meeting her family, Liv takes Henry around town to see Christmas lights on the Golden Gate Bridge, and the city lit up at night.
Henry finds out that Liv is related to the Changs, and she explains that she didn’t want him to think she got the photography gig as some sort of nepotism. Liv apologizes for hiding the truth. She asks Henry to wait to tell Charles that she is related.
The family talks about the food they cook for the party, and Henry is impressed/ They make dumplings together, which reminds Henry of his family. Liv’s mother still plays matchmaker and sends the new co-workers to deliver party invites. They almost kiss under the mistletoe.
While on the trolly, Nathan acts like a total tourist, and Liv is embarrassed at his display of joy, but Nathan encourages her to join in. When she does, Liv knocks over a bag of donation money they were picking up in her only moment of letting go. She tries to backtrack the route, but they can’t find the donations.
Liv tells her family, and they are PISSED. They uninvite her from the party and ask her to just try and care for one! It causes Liv to have an existential crisis.
After some encouragement, Liv goes live on social media and admits she is a Chang! (Like it was so shameful?)
It is finally time for the family party, which looks delicious. Liv makes a speech about community during the holidays and throughout the year. Then she goes into a rendition of O Holy Night or, as my captions said, “singing in a foreign language. It goes over well, and Liv has embraced her culture finally.
Henry is impressed with Liv’s selflessness, and they kiss. They take a family selfie together. It makes the first page of the paper.
