Synopsis (via Lifetime)

Gaby Diaz (Pedrique) is an app developer from Austin, Texas, and the last unmarried sibling in her very close and very traditional family. Every year, the Diaz family gathers at abuela’s house in Oaxaca, Mexico, a town renowned for its ’12 Challenges of Christmas,’ which playfully ignites the entire town’s Christmas spirit. When Gaby accidentally adds Alex Alvarado (Massa), a handsome graphic designer who’s lost touch with his own Mexican roots, to the family group chat, her well-meaning family decides to secretly invite him to join them in Oaxaca for Christmas. As they begin to play matchmaker for Gaby and Alex, can the Diaz family help Gaby and Alex recognize that each of them is actually the other’s perfect Christmas present.

Recap/Wine Thoughts

The movie starts with many texts in Espanol and then some fireworks?

Gaby is a tech wizard with a bad fashion sense. She tells her co-worker about her family’s Christmas traditions, including the fireworks. Gaby calls her Grandma and tells her that she is coming home for Christmas and can’t wait for her Christmas cooking.

In a cafe, Gaby face times with her dad, which is rude. Get some headphones, Gaby. He asks her about her dating life and worries she isn’t happy. She tells him she doesn’t need a man to find happiness.

Alex works on a design with his co-workers, and the meeting is interrupted by an onslaught of text messages. He is accidentally added to Gaby’s family group text. He texts them that he is on the wrong thread and has a sour stomach. He sends a selfie in a Santa hat. The family tries to set Gaby and Alex up on the text thread. (Much to Gaby’s embarrassment.)

Gaby calls Alex and apologizes to him, but he doesn’t mind the texts and keeps responding to the family. Then he runs into Gaby working on her laptop at the cafe. She doesn’t seem very interested in talking to him, and little does Gaby know that her family has invited Alex to Mexico for Christmas.

In Mexico, Alex and Gaby meet outside Abuela’s house, and she is confused AF. The family welcomes Alex and is surprised to learn he doesn’t speak Spanish.

Gaby has designed an app that helps organize all the Christmas activities. When something goes wrong with the app, Alex offers to help. Alex works on the app design while Gaby codes.

When the app is ready, they create a 100 pesos challenge, where they hide envelopes of money around Mexico and instruct people to upload pictures of what they do on the app. (Not sure how well that would work.) Most people buy groceries.

Throughout the movie, Gaby and Alex compare their lives. His family just wants him to be happy, and he wells that they are disconnected from their Mexican culture to assimilate to living in the United States. For example, his real name is Alejandro.

Then Gaby and Alex dance romantically and kiss. The moment is ruined when they start fighting over the app.

Later, they go to the town square, and we see some actual Mexicans! They break plates for good luck, and the town Mayor wants to use the app for their 12 days of Christmas event. Gaby is upset because she doesn’t want to sell the app.

It all turns out to be a language barrier, and Alex agreed to a deal with the mayor without knowing what was going on. The mayor clears things up with Gaby.

Gaby and Alex make up, and she promises to teach him Spanish; they start with kiss. Beso.

Abuela says that she knows the best, and the whole family participates in a parade through the town. Alex and Gaby kiss on a float as fireworks go off.

Side Note

I liked the use of ACTUAL Spanish throughout the movie because they were in Mexico.

The soundtrack in this movie ruined it.
