Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Having trouble fitting in at her new high school, outspoken teen Hannah is invited to a sleepover at the popular Melissa’s house, not realizing she was only invited to be the victim of a prank–but when the night turns more sinister than intended Hannah’s mother will become her only chance of surviving the night. Stars Sloan Mannino, Dawn Marie, Jenna Hogan, Joshua Bertell, and Sage Moore (2024).
Recap/Wine Thoughts.
Sweaty yardboy Cameron looks for his stepdad, Frank, but he is nowhere to be found. Frank’s daughter Melissa seduces Cameron, and they have sex. Later, he tells her it was a mistake because they are step-siblings! (She uses it against him as blackmail, which is problematic.)
After losing a parent, Hannah moved to the small town from the city and now lives in a motel while her mom renos the family home. She talks to her followers on social media #HealingWith Hannah, and they make her feel alone. Her mother, Jessica, brings Hannah a coffee with five creamers and nags her daughter to make friends.
The popular girls in town think Hannah is a dork for always posting on social media. Melissa is the Regina George wanna-be, Charlotte is the Gretchen Weiners, and Abbie is the nice one.
Of course, Hannah and Cameron instantly have a crush on one another. They chat about baseball and exchange numbers. Melissa watches on seething. She quickly interrupts and invites Hanna to a sleepover. Cameron is excited to see Hannah, and Melissa tells him he is creepy. (While she is the one who seduced her stepbrother.)
The popular girls: Abbie, Melissa, and Charlotte, all bond with Hannah over having bad relationships with their parents. Hannah blames herself for her father’s death for some reason, and her mother is now overprotective.
At Melissa’s mansion, they decided to go swimming. When Hannah says she doesn’t have a bathing suit, Melissa gives her a t-shirt to swim in. (That won’t work!) Melissa pushes Hannah into the pool and calls her “Motel Girl.” Hannah doesn’t have any of that and packs her bags. Abbie convinces Hannah to stay and promises to stop any more pranking.
Cameron sneaks Hannah out by the pool later and has some real talk. He thanks her for her social media channel, which has really helped him come to terms with his dad’s death. He likes Hannah because she puts her authentic self out there. Then they make out! (Melissa watches from the window.)
Hannah goes back inside and finds the girls listening to classical music CDs?????? WHAT ERA ARE WE IN?!?!?!? Melissa interrogates Hannah about her dead dad and is just generally mean. Hannah talks about her dad dying in a fire while he was home alone. Hannah thinks that if she was there, she could have saved him.
Jessica waits for Hannah at the motel and hangs out with the Spanish teacher, an old high school friend named Tracy, eating Chinese takeout and drinking cheap wine. (This is my favorite!)
The teens play Never Have I Ever, and they explain the rules to Hannah as if she were an alien. The questions are mean and pointed at making fun of Hannah living in a motel. (Like, seriously, why is she even sticking around? This slumber party sucks.)
Melissa asks, “Never Have I Ever made out with my friend’s brother.” and when Hannah doesn’t put her finger down. Melissa makes a scene and talks about breaking the vow. The punishment for breaking “the vow” is death. Hannah laughs it off and tries to leave, but Melissa pulls a knife on her.
Abbie tells Melissa that she is acting in love with her stepbrother and is too possessive of him. Then Melissa stabs Abbie in the stomach and refuses to call for help. Melissa locks Hannah and Abbie in a pantry. Charlotte wants to call for help, and Melissa tells her that she remembers Charlotte pushing Abbie into the knife she was holding. Then, she forces Charlotte to clean up the scene of the crime. As they clean, Charlotte starts to wonder if the others were right. Melissa is obsessed with Cameron.
Back at the motel, Jessica worries when Hannah doesn’t come back at the scheduled time. She gets a text from Hannah saying everything is okay, but it is from Melissa. Then Jessica has a sad monologue with Tracy about the hard times she is going through and her worries about her daughter. Tracy is a comforting friend and assures Jessica that everything will be okay. Their conversation is interrupted by iMessages sent to Hannah’s iPad. Jessica rushes over to see what is going on.
Charlotte admits that she wrote the card saying, “Never have I ever been in love with my stepbrother.” That drives Melissa into a rage, and she suffocates her friend. Then, Melissa collects their phones and calls Cameron, screaming for help.
While locked in the closet, Hannah and Abbie send Hannah out a window. Hannah tries to bust out not so discreetly with a hammer. Melissa comes running down and sees Hannah has left via the window. She is about to chase her down when Jessica pulls into the driveway.
Jessica and Melissa argue about Hannah’s whereabouts, and the struggle gets physical. Cameron comes home and knocks Jessica out with a bat. Melissa tells him that the police are on the way and they are going to be in big trouble. She tells him to do what she says so they won’t get caught. They move the bodies to Jessica’s car and tie everyone up in the home reno house. Cameron tells Melissa that he won’t let her manipulate him anymore and tries to call the cops, but she knocks him out with a 2×4 and tells his unconscious body that she loves him.
Hannah bursts into the motel and finds Tracy waiting for her. They call the police and rush back over to the sleepover. They see Jessica’s car in the driveway of the reno home and stop,
Melissa douses the home in lighter fluid and plans on framing Hannah with location tracking for arson/murder. She tells Jessica her whole plan.
Tracy and Hannah rescue everyone. Hannah and Cameron try to stop Melissa from starting the fire, but she is still jealous. Cameron leaves to help carry Abbie and Charlotte out of the house. Hannah and Melissa struggle over the lighter, but Melissa lights the lighter and continues to be paranoid that everyone hates her. Hannah talks her down with her healing skills. Everyone joins in and tells Melissa that they love her. Cameron hugs a crying Melissa and takes the lighter away.
Two weeks later, the home reno is coming along! They’ve painted a wall blue and no longer live in the motel. Tracy shows up with more Chinese food, and Hannah goes out with Abbie to watch Cameron’s baseball game. No mention of whatever happened to Melissa!!!
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Inspired by actual events, meaning someone had a sleepover one time.
We needed some resolution with Melissa here. I hope she gets some therapy!
