Synopsis (via Lifetime)
All That Glitters picks up as Ruby is driven from the Dumas mansion and returns to her beloved childhood home in the bayou, where she’s intent on creating a new life for her baby girl, Pearl. Ruby’s high school sweetheart, Paul, once again is there to support her, and when he moves her into his impressive home, she has new hope for the future. However, Ruby can’t escape the judging eyes of Paul’s mother Gladys (Alfonso), who knows Ruby and Paul’s dark secret, and Giselle continues to torment Ruby when she reveals news about Beau (Wood), Pearl’s birth father and Ruby’s true love. Ruby longs for another life. The deceit web continues when Giselle falls into a coma, and Ruby finds herself lured into a twisted plan to be with Beau.
Thoughts
The movie starts in a fancy new mansion. Paul is showing Ruby his beautiful new home and proposes to his half-sister. Ruby turns him down because it would be wrong. (Obviously.) Paul suggests having an open marriage and separate bedrooms. Ruby reluctantly agrees after a drunken friend of her father comes to her shack and almost rapes her. For safety (and definitely not the luxurious lifestyle, Ruby marries and moves in with Paul.)
Paul’s family, Gladys and Octavious Tate, disapprove of the marriage. Gladys tells Ruby not to disgrace the family name. Then Giselle arrives from Paris, so you know things won’t go smoothly. Giselle is quick to tell her sister that Beau is back as well and not married.
Seeing that Ruby is distracted by her sister and Beau’s return, he pulls out all the stops to seduce Ruby. They have sex, and Ruby tries to set a boundary. Paul gaslights her and tells her it was all a dream.
Daphne falls off a horse, hits her head on a rock, and dies. At her funeral, Ruby is horrified to learn that Beau and Giselle are dating. She tells Beau that the baby is his, and he is happy that Pearl will be raised in a fancy mansion. Then Beau and Giselle elope. Giselle is happy to rub that in her sister’s face.
Beau and Ruby set up a meeting at an apartment Beau has in New Orleans. They have sexy time, and she opens up about her family secret. Beau is not even worried about it.
The affair doesn’t last long because Paul finds out right away. He breaks some glasses angrily and then begs Ruby not to leave him.
Ruby is sad and ends the affair. When Giselle falls into a coma from a mosquito bite, Beau seizes the opportunity, calling Ruby and suggesting they swap places. Ruby tells Paul, and he decides to help with the swap if it makes Ruby happy.
The swap goes seamlessly, and Ruby does a bang-up job pretending to be her sister. Ruby discovers that Giselle was having an affair as well; it seems. (The sisters are more similar than they would like to admit.) One person notices the swap: Abby from school. At a party, Abby confronts “Giselle” in the bathroom about bullying her. When Ruby fails at being cruel, her cover is blown.
Meanwhile, Giselle is not doing well and is still in a coma. Paul didn’t think the coma would last so long and is driven to drink to quell his jealousy. Paul unravels, and his family is concerned. Then Giselle dies.
Ruby attends her own funeral, which is a lot. Gladys realizes what happened with the swap and confronts Ruby. She promises to make Ruby’s life as miserable as she made Paul’s. As they are arguing, Paul’s sister, Jeanne, rushes in and says that Paul is missing. He is found drowned in the bayou.
The next day, Jeanne arrives with the authorities and informs Ruby/Giselle that Gladys and Octavious are taking custody of their granddaughter since Ruby/Giselle is just an Aunt with no parental rights.
Ruby and Beau decide to do whatever they can to unravel their lies. They hire a lawyer and then appeal to Gladys to try and avoid a trial. That doesn’t happen; Gladys wants Ruby to pay.
At the trial, Ruby is dragged by the prosecution, which outlines how Ludacris is saying it. Gladys testifies against Ruby, and it is damming. Abby tells Ruby that she wishes she would tell the court that she knows. Ruby realizes that she must tell the whole truth and asks her lawyer to have Octavious take the stand.
Octavious admits that he had an affair with Ruby’s mother. He tells the court that Paul and Ruby are half-siblings, and that is why he was against their coupling. Ruby wins her daughter back.
Pearl is seen playing with some voodoo paraphernalia. A pregnant Ruby stops her daughter, and they toast to “fate and family.”
