Recap/Wine Thoughts
Much to my dismay, we are back on Maple Street for another installment of the unevenly toned TV Mini-Series.
This time, Maple Street is getting lit with teenagers. Brittney wants to party, but seeing that she is too intoxicated, her boyfriend Archer takes her home. She wants some S.E.X., but he declines, and Brittney is insulted. She attempts to storm off but can’t unlock the door, so Archer rushes to help her. Before he goes, he tells her he loves her, and I think that is true.
Britney is cobbered over the head, and her parents are nowhere to be found. She wakes up in her parent’s bed, confused. Dr. Paul checks on his daughter, and her mother, Betsy, gives Brittney water for the hangover. The parents blame Brittney for being drunk and falling.
Archer becomes worried when Brittney doesn’t answer his text messages and when her parents won’t let him see her. Brittney tells Archer at school that her parents took her phone but didn’t tell her that Archer had stopped by. She tells him things aren’t adding up, and they go to the school counselor. (oh wait, no, they go to the police station; the cops can’t do much because no police report was filed.)
While the parents throw a B.B.Q., play golf, and gossip over white wine, Archer and Brittney look through Dr. Paul’s tools in the garage and find a wallet for a missing man named Tony Dales. He and his vehicle end up being found in the lake by the town alcoholic while fishing.
Police question Dr. Paul and his family. Brittney recognizes the name but doesn’t say anything. She isn’t the only one who knows something; Dr. Paul threatened a nosey neighbor to keep quiet about seeing Tony Dale’s van outside the house and hiding scratch marks on his forearm.
Brittney confronts her mother about the wallet. Brittney calls her mother a liar when she has no good excuse and storms off. This interaction causes Betsy to chug wine. (It’s just me while trying to get through this Desperate Housewives wannabe.)
Dr. Paul and Betsy sit down and explain that Tony Dales attacked Brittney and that Dr. Paul accidentally killed him in self-defense. Dr. Paul got rid of the body and the car in the lake. The parents claimed they lied to protect Brittney from the trauma and want to make sure they get their stories straight since Detective Vaughn has been asking questions.
Brittney tells Archer everything because things aren’t adding up for her. Then she visits Tony Dale’s wife and asks her questions, but the wife has no answers. There is a photo of the wife when she was younger, and she looks a lot like Brittney. Brittney asks her mother if she is adopted, and Betsy shows Brittney her baby photos. (But then there is the fact that Dr. Paul is an OGBYN.)
Detective Vaughn talks with a former employee who tells her about Dr. Paul swapping babies after his wife has a stillborn baby. He threatened her into silence until she got stage 4 cancer. She told Tony Dales the truth about his baby.
Archer and Brittney break into Tony Dale’s wife’s house and steal some D.N.A., and the D.N.A. comes as a match! Brittney confronts her family about the test, and Dr. Paul admits to swapping the babies without telling his wife. Betsy leaves his ass, as she should!
Sandra Dales finds out about her daughter and cries over the lost time. Then she gets angry and breaks into the house on Maple Street to stab Dr. Paul with a big kitchen knife. Brittney and Archer try to stop Sandra, but I think she is totally spot on for wanting to kill Dr. Paul. Besty rushes in and knocks Sandra out because she stands by her husband for better or worse. (Eyeroll!)
Dr. Paul is taken to the hospital, and Sandra is arrested. Brittney and Betsy are left to pick up the pieces while the neighbors nosily watch on and speculate about who died.
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
Would these be considered cozy mysteries? Is that this genre? I hate it, so I’d like to know how to identify it.
Very dull movie.
