Synopsis (via Lifetime)
A woman is conned by a man who uses online dating ads to rob women.
Thoughts
The movie begins with the bloody body of a woman taken from Venice Beach. She turns out to be a coffee heiress.
Cut to Caroline (A redheaded Elisabeth Röhm), who works as an accountant at a place called “Funderstorm.” (It isn’t a fun place; her boss is embezzling money.) She has daughter Issie and her boyfriend Noah are obsessed with the paper’s missed connection section, no it’s 2016, a website. She finds a post that could be her mother. Issie replies to the man, his name is Gavin, and sets up a date.
At a fancy french restaurant, Caroline is charmed by Gavin’s fake French accent, and the wine helps too! He puts the moves on her and scares her off at first, but then they hook up. The next day he sends her flowers and invites her on a lunch date, which is sweet. The second date is more personal, and they talk about more serious issues. (Like her husband passing away.) Before the date even ends, Gavin invites Caroline to dinner at his place.
Gavin cooks Caroline some pasta and pours her a large glass of wine; I am in love with his man. So is Caroline. Things are moving fast. They pretty much frolic around on the beach like a commercial for constipation mediation.
The relationship picks up in sexual intensity, and we get multiple sex scenes. Caroline sends naughty pics to Gavin as well. She starts blowing off work and family commitments to be with Gavin.
While taking a bubble bath together, Gavin offers to help pay for Issie’s college tuition. Caroline jokes about stealing money from her wealthy boss to invest in his business. She thinks of transferring the money, but her co-worker Sean warns her that the company seems shady. Gavin tells her that he loves her even though they have only been dating a month.
Caroline stops by Gavin’s place unannounced and is surprised to meet his other redheaded (wig) girlfriend, Margo. She gets seduced into investing in his business as well and met him on a missed connection website. They work together to take him down.
Caroline meets with Gavin and tells him that she is ready to invest the five million dollars from her company. He tells her to deposit the money into an offshore account, and she tells him that she loved him. Then they find him dating more redheaded women. The woman is found murdered the next day. They turn him into the cops.
The police bring him in for questioning, and the lady detective is sassy and bold. She is awesome. The investigation is cut short when Gavin’s lawyer shows up. Caroline leaves the precinct and is surprised to find Gavin talking to her daughter in their home. Gavin stops talking in his fake French accent and tells Caroline that she broke his heart. He gets violent with her and then storms off. Margo is murdered, and Gavin is arrested for the murder.
Really, Caroline killed Margo because she found out she was behind everything and manipulating Gavin. Then Caroline extorts her boss for money to cover up his embezzlement. She gives Sean a 150,000 dollar bonus and leaves Gavin to rot in jail.
