Synopsis (via Hallmark)
Katherine is a Ghost of Christmas Present and she must help one soul, Peter, rediscover his Christmas spirit. But this year has something unusual in store.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie begins with a rag-tag group of three Christmas spirits that help people get the Christmas spirit back in record time. (You can tell right away that the three actors are having a lot of fun and have great chemistry.) Roy is the ghost of Christmas future, played by Reginald VelJohnson, and Arelen is the ghost of Christmas past, who LOVES a martini. (Played by Lori Tan Chinn.) Katherine, the ghost of Christmas present, decides to stay in Hartford, CT, to revisit the town.
As Katherine strolls the town, she walks into a dilapidated bar/restaurant and remembers dancing when she was in the 1950s. Her daydreams are interrupted by a do-gooder whose wealthy (but maybe dead parents) own the whole block. Katherine is surprised that Peter can see her and rushes off.
A ghost meeting happens, and it is pretty silly. The trio is assigned to Peter Brown, the guy Katherine saw in the bar. They drink and get their assignments, but Roy and Arlene keep his Christmas future and past from Katherine.
Peter, whose dad is not dead, seems pretty well adjusted, so the trio of spirits has to “scrooge” him. It doesn’t work because Peter recognizes Katherine, and it distracts him. He is excited to be getting his chance to be “Scrooged” and very self-aware. (He thinks he is spoile3d and feels guilty.) Another fun touch here is Peter has seen many adaptations of A Christmas Carol, just like us!
Arelen takes Peter to see his Christmas past, and Katherine tags along for the first time. (Because we have to get the romance in somehow!) Peter learns that past him is spoiled and gets enrolled in a private school. Peter is lonely and neglected, even as a teenager. His dad isn’t around much and is kind of a jerk. Peter remembers that young him didn’t want to take over the family business. Katherine almost sees a photo of herself, but Arelen zaps them away before revealing a secret.
It is not time for Christmas present! Katherine and Peter have a wardrobe change. They stroll the block his family owns and talk about his grandparent’s vision for the street. Which includes a community center. His grandfather was a philanthropist, but Peter’s dad is a businessman and turned the street into retail stores. Peter tries to learn more about Katherine, and she tells him he grew up on the same street. They talk about her grandmother, and Peter doesn’t know much about his grandmother. I worry that Katherine is his grandma. (Please, no!) Midconversation, they are snapped back when Peter says he doesn’t want to run the business.
Roy and Arlene tell Peter that the mission is done, and Peter says he isn’t ready. They are snapped back to the moment they almost kiss, and Katherine tells him that he can’t flirt with her. Then it starts to snow. Katherine snaps him to a carousel so they can ride together while “Present Peter” watches alone. Peter tells her that she is magical.
Katherine shows Peter him meeting a girl, and he asks if the woman is his future. Katherine responds that it is if that is what he wants.
Peter wakes up and calls his dad. He tells him he doesn’t want to run the company or be like his dad, “Rich and Broken.”
With the mission accomplished, Roy, Arelen, and Katherine go back and learn they “Scrooged” the wrong person. They were supposed to do Peter’s dad, Robert. Arelen is PISSED. (And it is the best.) If they don’t succeed, they may have no more Christmases events.
Since the trio already used their past, present, and future powers, they can’t do it again. Also, Dad Robert can’t see or hear them, so they will have to use Peter to change this father this Christmas. Peter tells them it is hopeless because his father has never opened up to him.
They decide to work together and recruit a famous singer (who has been Scrooged) to perform at the business Christmas Eve Party. Her singing is autotuned and not great, but Robert is VERY into it. He is not into his relationship with his son. Peter storms out of the party when his dad tells him he is too emotional.
The ghosts find Peter at the carousel, and Arlene takes Peter back to the diner/bar Rudy Tudy and sees “Kat” there. Peter and Katherine realize that she is involved in this story somehow.
They see Katherine and her friend Betsy stopping by the local store and meeting Peter’s grandfather. Kathrine gets hit by a car, taking donated goods to the homeless. If she hadn’t, Peter would have never existed.
Katherine sees her memorial, and Betsy dedicates the new community center to Kat. Betsy leaves the speech in the picture frame when she becomes too emotional.
In the present day, Peter and Katherine read the end of the speech. That gives them clarity.
Peter talks to his dad, and Robert gave up on his dreams in favor of providing for his family. He was worried about not having enough but didn’t realize his parent’s wishes. Peter gives his father the letter, and Robert has his “Scrooged” moment and realizes that you aren’t just an angel on Christmas; it is every day.
Peter tells Kathrine he is in love with her, even if she is a ghost. Roy takes Katherine to the future, where she lives happily with Peter. Katherine can envision it and knows where she wants to go.
Katherine goes through the heavenly door after saying goodbye to her ghost friends. When Katherine walks out the other side of the door, she walks into Peter’s arms, and they have a happy life at the Rooty Tooty. (Minus the singer who is really rocking out at the end!)
