A single mom answers a strange but enticing ad offering free rent in exchange for household chores, unwittingly plunging her and her family into grave danger.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie starts in the countryside, I guess. I don’t exactly know what that is. A woman sits by a fireside.

Cut to an out-of-work mother of two teens, Max and Olivia, whose husband recently died. The teens don’t really care about their mother and just want to hang out with their friends, which makes Sadie’s decision to answer a listing in the NEWSPAPER looking for a family kind of make sense. She lonely!

In the countryside, Sadie meets a husband and wife struggling to keep up with the house upkeep. Evelyn, the wife, stares out the window and comes in and out of lucidity. The husband, Grant, is hard of hearing. They show Sadie around and want her and her family to move in, but NEVER go in the attic. (Because of the mold?)
The teens, of course, don’t want to move to the countryside. Conveniently to the plot, they are evicted and have no other choice. The teens are devastated to learn the house has no wifi or even a TV. Mr. Grant tells them that they don’t need a TV; the ghosts in the woods by the old cemetery will keep them entertained. (A ghost story on Lifetime is not likely.)

The movie wants us to THINK something spooky is going on. Have I mentioned the guy who does yardwork who is randomly ominous? His name is Jake, and Grant/Evelyn disapprove of him… even though he is their neighbor. Later, Jake tells Sadie that Evelyn and Grant just moved. He actually thinks Sadie is their daughter, since she moved in with them.

The vibes continue to be creepy. Evelyn doesn’t want the family to move out EVER. Grant loves to scare the crap out of Max any chance he can get. The teens want out and try to talk to Sadie, but she says they can’t move out until Sadie lands a new job.

The teens stop doing chores and start looking into these old people and why they are so weird. They see Grant and Evelyn skinny dipping down by the swimming hole, and they find a grave marked “SON.” Then they sneak into the attic and find old pictures. They see pictures of Evelyn with a kid and think it is strange because Evelyn and Grant said they didn’t have any kids. (They also find a bed with chains hanging off of it.) When they tell Sadie, she is like “NBD!”

Evelyn grinds up some pills and puts them into water. Over dinner, Grant tells a story about their son who tragically drowned in the swimming hole. Evelyn’s twin sister, Betty, was watching the son and blamed her sister. Grant and Evelyn smothered Betty and her husband and moved into the house.
To keep Sadie and her family living with them longer, Grant and Evelyn rewrite their will to include Sadie and the kids. Sadie leaves her kids behind for a job interview and literally runs into Jake, who tries to warn Sadie that she and her kids are not safe.

Sadie gets the job, but will she get her kids? They are drinking that crazy water and start to feel weird. Sadie runs into some car trouble and is delayed. Still, it doesn’t matter because her kids are already locked in the attic, for discipline. Grant and Evelyn are unhinged. Grant literally waterboards Max, and I don’t know what Grant’s end goal here is.
Thankfully, Jake goes into the attic and at least tries to save the teens. He ends up getting knocked out, leaving Max to try to run and get help. Grant chases after Max, and they end up in the woods. There is a struggle over the axe, but Max just ends up screaming at Grant until her has a heart attack.

Sadie and the kids move out and go back to their everyday lives. Jake inherits the house in the countryside! The end!
STRAY Thoughts
All vibes, no entertainment value. I’m glad Hailey Duff tried something different.
Lifetime would never go supernatural, but it would have been cool if the watering hole were a fountain of youth.
