Synopsis (via Lifetime)
When Maisy Martin transfers to the college where her sister committed suicide, her official reason is to be closer to her grieving mother and father, but secretly she doesn’t believe in the suicide theory, and wants to find out the truth. What she will discover will shake her to the core. Some of the girls in the cheerleading squad are also webcam girls, and her sister was one of them. Thoughts
The movie begins with a college girl promising not to say anything while being thrown off a building plummeting to her death.
Cut two, Maisy, who is the twin of the murdered college co-ed. She will be replacing her sister on the squad at Vanderton. Lisa seems to be the most welcoming of the girls who are (understandably creeped out) that Amelia’s twin sister is taking her place.
Maisy tries to understand her sister’s state of mind and can’t understand why her twin sister would kill herself. Maisy attempts to break into her twin sister’s laptop and talks to Lisa, who reviles many secrets that Amelia was keeping. Amelia had an eating disorder, was uncomfortably close to Mr. Ron Thorton, the college’s athletic director, and had stopped talking to her twin all together.
Mr. Thornton is a shady man. He is working with the blonde cheer captain, Ella, to recruit girls to strip on webcams for money. Lisa apparently knows about the XXX-rated site and wants to stay out of trouble but tells Maisy about “Cheerleader Cam Girls.com.” Maisy has a flashback to her sister dressing up and wearing expensive jewelry. Could Amelia have been a webcam girl too?
Kiki (a probable webcam girl) has a barista brother named Max. For some reason, Maisy talks to him about his sister and tells him about the webcam life and both their sister’s involvement. It isn’t the best first impression. Later, Max and Maisy, pay Kiki in Krypto to see her face. Then they set up a in personal meeting for $2000 using a private IP address and a post-it over the computer camera. (VERY secure!)
Maisy continues to talk to the girls on the website and tries to get the cam girls to tell her who they really are. Her IP address is being used against her by Rob Thorton and his long-haired cronies. They find out that her father recently received a DUI. Then coerce him into drinking at a local bar and physically assaulting the long-haired loser. Maisey’s dad gets put in Jail, again.
Ella continues to sleep with Rob Thornton, and they devise a plan to drug Maisy before a TV appearance. Maisy appears sloppy and high AF. She throws up on air and is NOT taken off the squad. Lisa ends up taking care of Maisy, who tells her Coach Hayes that someone drugged her.
Maisy’s mom is threatened in the back while she is on a jog. The mother actively doesn’t want to hear what Maisy has found out about her sister. This mom is clueless. Meanwhile, their father blames himself, and that explains the drinking.
Max and Maisy show up in Philly to rescue Kiki. Max slut shames his sister for making a better life for herself. Kiki is trying to pay off student loan debt. (Which is so messed up.) Max dramatically begs his sister to quit the sex work game. Kiki is murdered in a parking lot by the long-haired guy because they think she will talk. Now, Max and Maisy vow to find out why their sisters were killed.
Maisy is suspended from school for plagiarism and is more desperate than ever to find out what the hell is going on. Even Lisa refuses to help her friend figure out who is in a photo with Amelia. That is because it is Lisa in the photo. Maisy demands to know why Lisa is lying and withholding information.
Lisa comes clean and tells Maisy about Rob and Ella running the website. Maisy goes to her parents with the information, and they want to go to the police without any evidence. The family decides to trace the money and take Rob, Ella, and the long-haired guy down. (Oh, also, they tell Maisy that her father is checking into rehab.)
Rob Thorton shuts down the site and breaks it off with Ella because he doesn’t like how it would look him sleeping with a student. (Yet he was running a cam girl site?)
Maisy tries to warn Ella about gathering evidence on Rob and the Long-haired guy’s financials. Ella promises that she was not involved in Amelia’s death. Then Ella does a lame cheer at a basketball halftime show. (Oh wait, we get a few basket tosses, so that is fun. Go Sharks!) The event is interrupted by the police, who arrest Rob in front of everyone.
Lisa admits that she tried to stop Amelia from releasing the news and confronted her on the roof. Amelia tripped and fell. Maisy makes Lisa go to the police with her story. Then Maisy sends her dad off to 90-day rehab and starts dating Max.
