Synopsis (via Lifetime)
Sister Wife Murder follows Chloe (Dia Nash), who after attending church for the first time one Sunday, becomes enamored with her pastor, Caleb (Matthew Daddario). In between secret moments and stolen glances, she falls in love with him only to learn that he’s already married with not one, but two wives. Despite their unorthodox situation, Chloe is overjoyed when he proposes. But after experiencing Caleb’s controlling behavior, she quickly realizes that their love was a far cry from happily-ever-after. Chloe and the other wives, Anna (Ashley Williams) and Margo (Ashley Dulaney), only have each other to depend on and when one of them mysteriously disappears, Chloe fears that she may be next.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The movie begins with a woman on the phone with 911 while someone breaks down a barn door.
Nine months earlier, we see the same woman, Chloe, partying with friends as a way to numb the pain from her father’s death two years ago. Chloe’s mother isn’t having a hungover daughter mooching off her and insists she join her at church.
Lucky for all of us, the pastor is HOT. Chloe is automatically attracted to Pastor Caleb. His pregnant blonde wife, Margo, offers Chloe cookies, but she declines. Chloe doesn’t decline Pastor Caleb’s offer to help with the youth group.
Ashley Williams shows up in an unexpected network crossover! (Good for her; it makes me like her more.) She is also Pastor Caleb’s wife. (Uh oh!) She offers Chloe a job with the church’s administrative side.
Chloe is none the wiser and unaware she is being scouted to be wife number three. Her friends, Alexis and Parker, caution her about having a crush on a married man, especially a religious one. They stalk his social media and agree that pastor Caleb is hot.
Caleb quickly moves on Chloe in his office, and they get it on after hours. It is problematic on so many levels: a married man who is a pastor at work?!?! Afterward, Pastor Caleb ignores Chloe, and she feels like a dirty little secret. Pastor Caleb tells Chloe she isn’t a secret, and his wife knows about the affair. Then, they have sex in the kitchen… because it is God’s plan?!?!?
When Chloe tries to ask off work for Alexis’ engagement party, Caleb guilts her into skipping the party in favor of helping with a church BBQ. Chloe opens up in group about her father’s death and the trauma it induced on her life. She asks Caleb where they stand in the relationship, and he tells her he is there for her. That is why it is so shocking when she finds him in the supply closet hooking up with Margo.
Chloe confronts Caleb, and he admits to being polyamorous. Margo and Ashley Williams are his wives. Then he invites Chloe to join his family, and they have dinner, followed quickly by a backyard wedding and then Chloe moves in with her new family.
Chloe must wear a modest dress in the home, but she and Caleb do not act holy in the bedroom! He gets her all hot and bothered before moving on to another wife.
Chloe’s only job seems to set the table, and she can’t even do that right. Ashley Williams critiques how Chloe sets the table and dresses in the home, which sets Chloe off. Caleb reprimands Chloe like a child and sends her to her room to pray without dinner.
It is Margo’s birthday, and she has formed a special bond with Chloe. Chloe gives her new friend her mother’s bracelet and is surprised to learn Margo doesn’t have a relationship with her mother since she got plural married to Caleb. Chloe tries to talk to Caleb about Margot, but he gets abusive and backhands Chloe for questioning his authority as her husband. (Margo watches from the closet.)
Alexia and Parker are concerned when they see Chloe at a coffee shop with bruises on her arms. They talk to the church and get Pastor Caleb fired for being in a polyamorous relationship, sending him into an abusive rage. (Like breaking glasses and slapping Ashley Williams.)
Margo sees Caleb talking to the baby and telling her to obey her husband. (Which is absurd!) Margo decides she needs to escape and sneaks out in the middle of the night with her daughter. Cale catches her and drags them back into the house. Caleb takes Margo away for the weekend and leaves Chloe to care for the baby.
When Margo doesn’t return, Caleb claims she left and won’t return. Chloe’s texts and calls to Margo go unanswered, and she worries. Then, a message comes into Ashley Williams, and Chloe reassures them that Margo is fine. Chloe facetimes Margo to show her the baby and hears the phone ringing in the house. Chloe wants to call the police, but Ashley Williams stalls.
Ashley Williams takes Chloe to an abandoned old church where Caleb has a whole story prepared. He claims that Margo was on drugs and overdosed; he was texting to protect their image. Chloe goes outside for some fresh air and finds the bracelet she gave Margo near a shallow grave.
Chloe shows Ashley Williams the bracelet and demands to know the truth. She admits to helping Caleb bury the body. Chloe runs to the shed and calls 911. We are back to the beginning of the movie.
Caleb busts down the door and grabs a lead pipe. Chloe tells him that God is watching, and he tries to strangle her, but Ashley Willaims stops the assault. The wives tell the police everything.
Chloe goes back home to her estranged mother with the baby. All Chloe’s mom wanted to do was go to church. Damn. That is messed up! Chloe and her mom make up in a touching scene. Then they go to Margot’s mother and show her their granddaughter.
Side Note/Stray Thoughts
They kept saying this was based on true events, but not anyone in particular. Is there a sister-wife murder I’m not aware of?
Ashley Williams being in this was fun!
