Jennifer and Meg Swift are sisters who couldn’t be closer despite living hours apart. Jennifer is in Salt Lake City, running a successful restaurant she started with her late husband and raising her teenaged son Simon. Meg stayed in their hometown of Hazelwood, helping their parents run the local bakery. This Christmas is the family’s first since the passing of Uncle Dave who owned the town’s beloved theater, The Madison, where many memories were made over the years. When Jennifer and Simon return home for the holiday, they become wistful for one more Christmas at The Madison, despite that it’s for sale and in need of repairs. Meanwhile, Meg is helping Jennifer’s restaurant staff in Salt Lake prepare for a Christmas competition among local restaurants with the winner earning money for the charity of its choice. With the sisters switching cities leading up to the holiday, they find a new sense of purpose and discover what they both truly need in life and in love.
Recap/Wine Thoughts
The Swift sisters had a tradition of going to the movie theater on Christmas called the Madison.
City gal Jennifer and her teenage son, Simon, are grieving the loss of her Uncle Dave, who owned the theater. She owns a successful restaurant and is heading home for a holiday. Her sister, Meg, picks them up with items from the family bakery. Jennifer tells Meg to just stay in the city for a few days in her home while she goes home to help with the sale of the Madison.
Once in town, Jennifer and Simon stop at The Madison and take in the old-time charm. Eric and his daughter, Madzie, also stop by. He flirts with Jennifer. He was helping Uncle Dave restore the theater. Jennifer sees how upset her mother is about Uncle Dave and decides to throw one more Christmas at the Madison as a surprise.
The theater is in bad shape, with no heat and fuses blowing. Jennifer is motivated to get things fixed up and calls Meg to tell her the good news. Meg encourages her sister and makes fun of her for working with her high school crush turned city councilman, Eric. Jennifer denies any sparks with her old flame.
When the light of the marquee, the word gets out, and the whole town wants to come. Everyone, except Meg, plans to stay in the city a little bit longer.
The reopening is a big success and impresses the interested buyer. (Even if he is from a dreaded movie chain.) Well, that is until the popcorn machine catches on fire and the projector loses power. The movie is canceled.
Jennifer wants to try again and invites the whole town for a do-over one night only Christmas Movie Night. Simon finds a state of ark projector. When they test it out, Eric and Jennifer kiss in the theater; it is her first kiss in the Madison. Jennifer might want to stay in her hometown, and Simon also wants to stay.
Mag and Joe show up with bad news about the restaurant, and Jennifer abandons her plans to stay in town. Simon begs his mom to stay because they both seem happy for the first time in a long time. Before she leaves, Jennifer asks Eric if a relationship is possible, and he says, “hell yes, it is!”
The second movie night is actually sold out. Simon made an impassioned speech and touching tribute to his Uncle Dave. It inspires Jennifer and Meg to consider running the theater together and not selling.
